About Our Brewery
How’d we get started?
It was 2015. Winter. A bunch of friends were sitting around a table, about to try Jason’s first ever batch of home brewed beer; a one gallon batch of a red ale brewed from an extract kit purchased as a Christmas present. With the bottle opener poised, ready to pop the top, someone said, “Wait! You need to name it first.” The first thing that came to Jason’s mind was a memory from his past and that became the name of the beer… and from that moment came the idea of what Third Hill Brewing Co. would become – a place to “make some memories.”
A Boy and His Dream
Jason, a natural entrepreneur and people-builder, had always wanted to own his own business. It was just a matter of time to find the right fit. He fell in love with the community that was formed by the craft beer industry, and so, sitting at that table in 2015 with his community of friends, drinking his first home brew, the idea came together. Starting with that small beginning of a 1 gallon extract kit boiled on a stove top, Jason spent nearly a decade of craft beer recipe research & development (some may call it rigorous home brewing), and nurtured a plan to bring Third Hill Brewing from his basement to the DMV. The pandemic was the “straw that broke the camel’s back,” and Jason and Danielle decided that it’s now or never! Jason didn’t want to give regret a place to live and turned all his efforts toward moving Third Hill Brewing from a concept neatly residing in his basement to a fully realized business, now living at 8216 Georgia Ave in Silver Spring, MD.
What’s in a name?
Before the home-brew kit, and the birth of this crazy idea, there was this girl… No, seriously, there was. That girl (Danielle) would later become Jason’s wife. Danielle grew up in a tiny little town on the southern edge of the Adirondack mountains in New York, called Salisbury Center. Behind her house, were three hills separated by rows of stones stacked on stones reminiscent of a Robert Frost poem. The first hill was covered with trees, and the second was little more than a cleared hump of earth. But on the other side of the second hill stood the giant Third Hill, wrapped in tall pine, maple and oak trees at the edges where the stones were laid. Everyone knew the Third Hill. It was where she went sledding and built forts and hide-aways with her friends and siblings, and, later, when Jason and Danielle were dating, where they would walk for some quiet time away from the chaos of a busy life.
The Third Hill was a place to have fun, escape the stress of life, recenter yourself and connect with the people you care most about.
Make Some Memories
